Efficiency improvements accompanied the capability changes. Anthropic reports 15% fewer turns per task and 35% fewer output tokens compared to Opus 4.7 for equivalent results, as well as a 61% reduction in multimodal token costs. The API gained two ergonomic changes: support for system-role messages mid-conversation (allowing instruction updates without restating the full prompt), and a reduction in the minimum cacheable prompt length from 4,096 to 1,024 tokens, lowering the threshold for prompt-cache savings in shorter interactions.

Why It Matters

The code honesty framing is the most archivally significant element of the Opus 4.8 release. Previous frontier model releases have emphasized capability gains — benchmark scores, context lengths, reasoning depth. Anthropic's decision to center a model announcement on a self-critique behavioral metric represents a different set of claims about what constitutes progress.
